Seminole Ridge rips Lake Worth 27-0; Thursday's other flag football results
Thursday, March 26, 2009
The Seminole Ridge flag football team recorded its fourth consecutive shutout Thursday, handling Lake Worth 27-0.
Seminole Ridge (4-1) lost to Jupiter to start the season and hasn't allowed a point since. Against Lake Worth, the Hawks defense allowed just 25 yards of offense.
"After that Jupiter game, I told the girls 'I wouldn't want to be the one playing you next'," Seminole Ridge coach Austin Bowe said. "They beat us and we knew what we had to do and we didn't do it, and they realized there was a reason for all the coaching points."
Seminole Ridge quarterback Hillary Mears had two rushing touchdowns and passed for another against Lake Worth (5-2). She was 9-for-20 for 102 yards passing with an interception.
Charlene Thome contributed a rushing and a receiving touchdown for Seminole Ridge.
Lake Worth's defense put more pressure on quarterback Mears than she said she had seen all season.
"I'd like to work on my passing," Mears said. "It's gotten better but they had some good pass rushers."
But the Seminole Ridge defense kept on Lake Worth quarterback Nicole Maxwell just as much.
In the third quarter, with the Hawks leading 13-0, Seminole Ridge's Ashleigh Fragale broke through for two sacks of Lake Worth quarterback Nicole Maxwell that backed the Trojans up to their own 5-yard-line.
"I just did what my coach told me to do and that was to go up and cut in and that kept her in so (Maxwell) couldn't roll," Fragale said. "I just kept her in there and was able to get the flags."
After Lake Worth punted, Seminole Ridge took advantage of its good field position by taking a 20-0 lead when Coral Collum threw a pass to Mears, who pitched it to Thome, who ran in from 15 yards out.
