No. 5 Park Vista 24, Glades Central 14: Cobras rush for 266 yards in win

Friday, September 21, 2012
by Jeff Greer

Antwan Washington lay motionless, face down on the turf, dazed from a hard hit that jarred the ball loose from the Glades Central quarterback's hands.

Ten yards away, star running back and receiver Will Likely stood stoically. Coaches said nothing. The Effie Grear Field crowd was silent as Park Vista's players jumped and shouted and held up the recovered fumble in triumph.

For the second week in a row, a visiting team drove to Belle Glade and made the county's rowdiest atmosphere eerily quiet, as fifth-ranked Park Vista steamrolled past Glades Central 24-14 with a relentlessly efficient rushing attack.

"All we can do is keep pushing," said Glades Central coach Roosevelt Blackmon. "Don't give up. We can't give up."

Over the first half, it appeared as if Glades Central, now a stunning 0-4, had finally found its groove. It was competing with undefeated Park Vista (4-0), owner of one of the area's top defenses.

But a nearly nine-minute third-quarter scoring drive showed Park Vista was still fresh. Glades Central was worn out, and Park Vista ultimately used 10 different ball carriers to run for 266 yards.

The Cobras churned out 19 first downs and scored three touchdowns and a field goal in six red-zone trips.

"The strength of our team is we have a lot of talented kids," Park Vista coach Brian Dodds said. "We spread the ball around and kept guys fresh tonight."

Glades Central was undone by turnovers. The Raiders lost two fumbles, and Washington's last pass of the evening was snatched up by hulking Park Vista safety Marques Gayot, who also scored on two receiving touchdowns.

In a game that only had 13 possessions, those turnovers were killer.

"That's our biggest problem," Blackmon said. "You can't beat a team as good as that with that many turnovers."

Park Vista for its part looked polished and poised. The Cobras gave up two first-half touchdowns but tightened up at halftime.

Glades Central managed 92 rushing yards but merely two second-half first downs.

"What helped us was how poorly we played last week," Dodds said of his team's sluggish win over Palm Beach Lakes. "We had our best week of practice. It really opened some eyes."

Qwad Martin, Park Vista's shifty quarterback, was 6-for-9 for 53 yards and two touchdowns. He ran 14 times for 77 yards. His second scoring pass to Gayot, a 7-yarder that capped Park Vista's long, momentum-winning third-quarter drive, gave Park Vista its first lead of the game.

Meanwhile, Likely, Glades Central's do-it-all star and most dangerous offensive weapon, mustered 71 total yards on seven rushes and five catches. He was mostly bottled up.

For his part, Washington was efficient until the end. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns, using screen and swing passes to get his quick teammates the ball.

But it wasn't enough. And Glades Central left its stunned crowd wondering if this season could be turned around.

"We still believe they're a very talented team," Dodds said. "We caught them at the right time."

We know that Glades is having a bad year - You've wrote about it over and over. It seems like each time PV wins - the opening story line is about the other team's woes - Just saying. Great Game - Both teams.

Advocate commented on September 22, 2012 at 12:42 a.m.: report abuse

Breaking News: PV defeats an 0-4 team. The news jumps up and down over this. WOW! Their quarterback goes 6 for 9 while the losing team's QB goes 21 for 29 for 173 yards. Hope PV really knows where it's lacking. The defense can only do so much. Prediction: Another game one playoff exit by PV unless the coach incorporates some additional offensive talent. You guys need a quarterback. Enough said.

hey joe are whoever is trying to hide with a fake name, stop being a hater, you hear about one guy that turned 19 during the end of the season and now all of a sudden we were great because we had older players. man cut it out, if you want to say all that, then you all over there stop recruiting kids.the fact of the matter is that we have been whipping ass on the coast for years, as a matter of fact before this year, we had dominated the coast. the teams that are beating glades central this year have never beating glades central ever before. dwyer 1-6 vs the raiders, american heritage 1-3 vs the raiders and so on. over the last decade we may have lost probably 2 games to teams from the coast. I want you to think about that, out of 100 regular season games all the games we played against coastal teams we have an almost perfect record. So when you get these haters on here talking that nonsense I have to chime in and check those fools. Don't get me wrong, I am not upset about losing because these are good teams we are losing against and I give them all the credit in the world, the raiders are a very young and inexperienced team, and add that to the fact that they have over 25 players that are starters on coastal teams rosters and you have what they call a rebuilding year. you see central could once say we don't rebuild we reload, but when you have that many players migrating to the coast you have to rebuild and that's just a fact. we can't just recruit players we have to grow them. So I say to all you coastal teams congradulations you have finally slayed the big bad dragon, but you better have fun this year because we are taking notes and there will hell to pay when we see you again. and thats not a threat that is a promise.

Glad to hear you're a Cobra Fan. You may not have made the drive to the Glades so let me tell you what's not in the article. The Cobra's dominated Offensively most of the Game. It would have been nice if Jeff put PV's total time of possession in his article. Beside having a 13 minute drive that resulted in a score in the 2nd, they had another long drive in the 4th that unfortunatly resulted in a turnover in the endzone. Quads numbers were very good. Did you notice he had 77 yards Rushing? That's more then any single Glades player. And you're right - The Defense played well. Marquise had an incredible interception the nailed the win for PV. Glad your picking the Cobra's to go in the Play Offs AGAIN ... PV takes it one game at a time.

You can make excuses that Glades Central is young, they don't have this or that. Just face it they are not a good team at all right now. You can tell by their record 0-4. I think that teams/people are just happy to be beating them, bad season are not. Wouldn't you be happy to beat a team that has whipped on you for years? That has multiple state championships, that has one of the best football programs in the nation, I know I would. To the remaining teams that play Glades Central take advantage of this down year because it might not last long. GC Raiders Keep your head up and leave everything on the field.

PV Qwad the quarterback rushed for 77 yards threw for 53 yards, so make him running back instead. He is an athelete, but put him in the right position.

WELL COACH TADPOLE IT'S TIME TO SHOW WHAT KIND OF A COACH YOU ARE!!!

PBCFBFan commented on September 22, 2012 at 2:27 p.m.: report abuse

PV QB Qwad Martin can, and does, throw the ball well. He only threw for 53 yards because that's all that was needed. Two TD passes as well. The TEAM ran for over 250+ yards; PV's "undersized, inexperienced, soft" O-line abosolutely dominated the line of scrimmage, all night long. Anybody trying to paint this story into a "Qwad Martin can't throw" story simply doesn't know or understand football.

So Right commented on September 22, 2012 at 2:38 p.m.: report abuse

We have a hidden talent on the GC offense and his name is Ralfael Ovalles. He is a quarterback, but has never been given the chance to showcase his talent. There is so much of FAVORTISM to the point that Coach Blackmon is not thinking clearly. If it doesn't work, you have to regroup and execute all possible options. That is what's wrong with this picture. Get it together Coach, or you will be OUT. Oh, how I miss Coach Hester. At least we made it to state both years he was there beacuse the team was a well oiled machine and disciplined. Let's get back to our level GC.

footballfan commented on September 22, 2012 at 2:43 p.m.: report abuse

PV Qwad throws well, 23 for 48 for 4 games, under 50% yea that is throwing well

footballfan commented on September 22, 2012 at 2:48 p.m.: report abuse

Michelle Williams commented on September 22, 2012 at 3:15 p.m.: report abuse

Seemingly the best coaches sit in the stands and cirticize the person and staff that dedicates themselves to the program. The mentality in Belle Glade speaks volume and if Bog Dog, Advocate and Big Bear represents the community, the entire city is in trouble. Support for Tadpole.

I played for Coach Blackmon 4 yrs from JV to Varsity 00-04... And He's a great position coach he coached DB's and i can truely say the years i listened to him and let him coach me were my best years... These kids playing today don't have the GC swag that we had back in those days... these kids dont practice like champions, Will Likely and a few others are the few that take practice serious. You can only blame the coach for some of the fail but the kids have to get on the field and execute. From the offense to the defense is garbage. None of these kids wouldve been able to play for Coach Bueno or Coach Watson, back when u had to go through spring and actually got cut from the team. Now if you get cut ya parents come to school wanting to know why they son didnt make the team. Point blank period these kids have NO HEART.... and think winning comes off the past... None of these kids won a State Championship....

all these teams winning games around of applause to you... This goes to show that we are THE GREATEST OF PALM BEACH COUNTY... Because even with a no win season you guys are estatic to win a game against us. We dont boast on win wins because its expected of us... This year belongs to some one else. We give props to everyone that beat us. 2 thumbs up... we will be back... remember 2002 6-4 season. Lost to Suncoast, Hallandale, Pahokee & Clewiston... 2003 seaon 12-1... GC vs Suncoast 35-0... GC vs. Hallandale 48-0 (Playoffs)... GC vs. Pahokee 28-15...
GC vs Clewistion 44-9... POINT BEING MADE... WE WILL BE BACK!!!!!!

To michelle williams:
I don't know what you mean about me representing my city, but you need to actually read my post because apparently you did not. I never once said anything about tadpole are any of the coaches, I was addressing someone from the coast talking about the reason we are losing is because we don't have 19 and 20 year old kids playing. So before you talk about someone why dont you find out what was said first you see thats how gossip starts. And by the way I do a lot to support the youth in our city I just thought you whould want to know that. So I ask you what is your mentallity.

BIGDAWG commented on September 22, 2012 at 6:17 p.m.: report abuse

Ms. Williams
I don't speak for the community of Belle Glade nor Pahokee.
I speak only for myself and because it is my 1st amendment right to do so; and if it offends that is your hang up not mine. simple push on to something more fitting to a female.
Why don't pick yourself up a subscription of better home and gardens or what ever tickles your fancy.
I come on here to tease with sport fan and players nothing serious. nothing against Coach Tadpole. Was he your childhood sweetheart or something. I find it humorous you would get irritated over someting so juvenile. Get a clue, because life short, and even shorter for those whom are all so serious. Have fun, live a little, and love alot. Respect mon

Stop making excuses for the poor coaching. If the administration would had done a little research instead of going against the interview committees recommendation, Blackmon would never have been G.C.'s coach. Just check the records, or his interview during the Pro Scouting debut, and maybe it will reveal that the coaches road the SHORT bus to school

I was hoping that this team would win on talent like last year. Because Tadpole don't have a clue. He finally fell on that knife he was putting in Jet & Snead back and he bleeding bad. This what happen when u treat kids wrong ,

BIGDAWG commented on September 22, 2012 at 11:25 p.m.: report abuse

Okay Ms. William it is your turn to give some constructive feed back.
I wish both Glade Central and Pahokee nothing best. I too have have Coached for nearly twenty years so I know the caliber of talent on the muck and I know a busted coach when I see one.
the first time I heard Palm Beach Lakes hired Alonzo Jefferson as the head coach; I called out here first. He was a great athlete, But he would make horrible coach and my statements were true. He ran that program into the ground. the upmost respect to all those who coach and mentor young student athletes.
But when you receive a pay check for what you do you are considered to be professional at what you do, and this title is weather you suck at it or not.
so with that being said Let the JAW JACKING CONTINUE.

They are a great group of folks out there.
I for one love to go games out there, because so far there has been no other school that has matched them. As matter of fact I like all great foods better than the action on the field. Like they say on the Television. it is fantastic
I have nothing but love for everyone out there.

Glades Central 0-4? To soon to hope they go 0-10. Could not happen to a better team. LOL

Michelle Williams commented on September 23, 2012 at 12:01 p.m.: report abuse

Big Dawg, I see your expressions reflects you. You mentioned having coached for twenty years, I hope your contribution to coaching was not trying to encourage or mentor young men. Perhaps a better position for you would have been to stand on the sideline, hold the clipboard or move the chain on downs. Perhaps you should use audio dictation rather than writing, because your attempt to express yourself intelligently in writing sends the message you should not be apart of the discussion. Perhaps a field trip to McDonalds kids play area would better suit you. Being critical doesn't help build a program OTOH, thats the mentality in the Glades which is why some people are not going any further than GC football stadium on Friday nights. There is a sickening mentality on the muck and "ya" can't escape it. Now, I will resume reading my Better Gardens and home mag. Knowledge is power.
