Jupiter's Kevin Paxson regrets getting suspended just before playoffs

Tuesday, February 09, 2010
by Jason Lieser

As his team prepared to play the most important games of its season, Jupiter senior Kevin Paxson wondered if his high school career already was finished.

Paxson, the team's best player, was ejected from Friday's game against Dwyer after receiving two technical fouls and picked up a third as he left the court. The Florida High School Athletic Association suspended him Monday for two weeks, which includes the District 9-6A tournament and a potential first-round state playoff game.

"I regret the whole entire situation, but there's nothing I can do now except hope and wait," Paxson said Tuesday. "I feel bad for myself and my team, especially the seniors. It sucks to go out like that."

The Warriors (19-4) play Palm Beach Gardens on Wednesday and would advance to Friday's district semifinals against Santaluces with a win. A loss in either game would end Jupiter's season, but if the Warriors win both, they would reach the district championship game and qualify for the state playoffs.

It will be a challenge to do so without Paxson, who averaged 24.7 points and 4.6 assists per game.

Midway through the third quarter against Dwyer, Paxson went for a lay-up and thought he was fouled. When the officials did not blow the whistle, he argued and was assessed a technical foul. Another referee quickly called him for second technical within a few seconds, resulting in an automatic ejection.

As Paxson walked to the Jupiter bench, he continued talking to the officials. The officials' report to the FHSAA quoted him saying, "You guys suck, and you guys are the worst officials we have had all year."

"I didn't say the 'you suck' part — I don't know where that came from," Paxson said.

"I looked at the officials, pumped my fist and said, 'Oh come on.' It felt like he gave me two for the same thing. The first one was definitely deserved, but I feel like the second one was a little too trigger-happy."

Paxson believed his reputation as one of the area's most fiery and demonstrative players hurt him.

"The refs were going for me," he said. "They were trying to prove a point and they had their opportunity."

Part of Paxson's frustration stemmed from an earlier play in which he was elbowed in the face but the Dwyer player was not called for a foul. Paxson missed most of the second quarter as paramedics tended to the cut below his right eye and he later went to Jupiter Medical Center for stitches.

Warriors coach John Andersen did not dispute the officials' report, but thought a two-game suspension would have been appropriate.

Andersen has spoken with Paxson about his on-court demeanor several times this season, but was surprised by what happened Friday.

"Kevin's been warned about the antics," Andersen said. "I don't fault the referee at all.

"I never thought it would get to this point. He was doing great. He's been a great leader and been doing fantastic."

The FHSAA also fined the school $250 for Paxson's offense, plus another $100 because he was the fourth Warriors basketball player to receive a suspension this season.

In December, three Jupiter players were suspended after an altercation with Palm Beach Lakes.

Post correspondent Joseph Kairalla contributed to this report.

I have watched several of Jupiter's games this season. That kid is out of control. He talks trash to his opponents, he talks trash to the opposing coaches, and he talks trash to the fans. I have never in over 20 years of watching palm beach county high school basketball seen a kid with such terrible sportsmanship. The officials for the Dwyer game did what other officials should have done long ago! I was at the game and I heard that kid say much worse than "You guys suck." His behavior all season has been a disgrace to Jupiter High and a disgrace to palm beach county high school basketball.

Dr J commented on February 9, 2010 at 8:31 p.m.: report abuse

PB Fan you are right on the money. The kid has NO RESPECT FOR GAME or HIS COACH.
He even is quoted in article saying :"it sucks to go out like this" His parents must be proud as well as the Jupiter HS ENGLISH Department...how articulate.

KARMA BOY....I notice you are never around to stand toe to toe with a kid off the court. Ran pretty quick after Atlantic game...

Keep your head up, Paxson. I've known you for years. I've seen the way other teams try to stop you by putting one or two defenders in your face and talk trash to you night after night. You have handled this well all season and been a credit to the game. I've seen you hug other players and coaches and shown great sportsmanship. These other people who are talking don't know you. They are haters and get-off by saying bad things about anyone they can. Shame on the haters.

first of all what is wrong with saying it sucks to out like this.... THAT IS ENGLISH..... 2nd of all after the atlantic game paxson was seen hugging the atlantic coach, and player that guarded him the whole game so get your facts straight

Oh my goodness. I saw the game and read the officials report. What is so terrible? He pulled his shirt out of his pants. Oh my. How horrible. He said "suck". Wow, what profanity! How do you get a 2 week suspension from this???? He is a senior and should be getting ready for the playoffs. Totally wrong. Totally unfair.

Jupiter Alumni commented on February 9, 2010 at 10:03 p.m.: report abuse

Jupiter coach has lost control. The first outburst from any player would have been sever punishment from me as a coach. There would have been 1 warning from the coach and anything after he would ride the bench for a couple of games. respect is more important than winning to me. This paxson kid shows no respect for authority. Hopefully, this will teach him if he plays at the college level. Let Coach Steele take over for Anderson, he will not tolerate none of that nonsense.

Paxon's problem got it's start long before he got to Jupiter High. There it was continued and allowed to spiral out of control. There is no question that he is a gifted basketball player, but this problem was created by 'faulty'
parenting and was allowed to continue. I have followed Jupiter basketball for more than a few years and stopped going to the games two years ago, due largely to the fact that the behavior was terrible (Not just Paxson). I don't pretend to know all the answers, but one reader said suspension after a warning. I have witnessed more than one coach sending a message without the state or anyone else getting involved and it really works. Set the 'ground rules' early, one warning, and then sit the bench. It works! If that doesn't work, then there isn't much you could do but give him a big 'so long'! If a kid truly loves the sport the suspension will be enough.

Grammar? No I'm not from kennedy estates or limestone. Coach Steele had some hard nosed coaches on his AAU travel teams and when he was playing for the rec center. I'm from Jupiter the town of Jupiter. Where I was Raised and proud of. Yes Jupiter high may be a new school, But the old Warriors spirit lives on. I take pride in the old jupiter and who we are. I definitely agree with You "OLD MAN"!

Once again Kevein puts himself in front of his team mates. I'm sure he has a lot of regrets... kid needs to quit smoking so much pot and learn a little from this incident!! What are you hoping for Paxson? You did say exactly what they quoted I was sitting behind the bench! He hurt his team.. but I am sure they'll have a great game tonight.... with out him!!

I have read numerous e-mails sent in about this situation. There have been alot of very good e-mails riding both sides of the fence. A true basketball fan will have views for both sides, right or wrong I feel is not the issue here. I'm going to show my age here and make one comment. Years ago basketball was played with speed, ability, talent and brains. These days it is played with muscle, who can push, bump, trip, hold, trash talk more wins. The refs can not control the game due to the way it is played. I would love to see all these kids that are playing now try to play real basketball like we did years ago.I will lay odds that they can't even come close. If it was played the right way you would not have any of these problems and Jupiter would have Paxson for the districts.

Coach Anderson is a very good coach. I feel he understands you have to let your players play and if that means letting them talk trash then so be it, what good player doesn’t talk trash here and there. Is Paxson out of control? Just a little. Will coach Steele be a more hard nose coach? I think his disciplinary practices will be different from Anderson but he can’t perform them simple because he has to take the back seat as an assistant. Even though some would say Anderson has a problem controlling players, he doesn’t have a problem winning and that why he’s the head coach.Someone else is going to have to step up big if jupiter wants a shot at states

to begin, all of the adults on these blogs that trash talk Kevin Paxson, a 17 year old kid, you should really be ashamed of yourselves and the lives you lead. he is a high school kid!!!!!!! and a good kid!!! for one of you to accuse him of "smoking too much pot," i would worry if he and his family try to find out who you are, and sue your insecure ass. ever heard of deformation of character???? look it up! now to basketball... there are a couple people on these blogs that should be out lawed from blogging about athletics. after reading some of the above comments, i came to the conclusion that 80% of the bloggers are just that, bloggers. you have never played a day of any sport. therefore you cannot comment on athletics. i am a former jupiter player and can say from experience that when we went on the road to dwyer, lakes, gardens, everywhere!! the verbal abuse we got and jupiter still gets, is way more inappropriate than "you suck" jupiter hears things like F**k you Cr**kers, ill BEAT your A**, yall are just pu**y cr**kers... these are things that a jupiter player hears every away game that we go to! i say we bc i am very close with the entire staff. coach andersen was asst to rob long when i played and coach Steele was in his first year. oh and by the way im the only d1 bball signee from jupiter in the past 25 years, so if there are any comments anyone would like to direct towards me... please do!!!

ps..coach andersen has plenty of control of his team! if he didn't have control of the team, i dont think they would be back to back district champs going for a 3 peat. winning at jupiter is harder to do than any other school in the county!. there are so many factors that contribute to that... one being that we continually loose our best athletes to neighboring recruiting schools like dwyer, and cardinal newman just to name a couple. remember the late 90's and early 2000's. remember when newman won back to back state championships..?. yea their amazing PG was from where?? oh yea, jupiter!!! and i think if my memory serves me correct... dwyer is sending a football player to UF next year, that is from where?? oh yea, jupiter!!! the most frustrating thing is that all of these schools and their affiliates deny they do any recruiting... anyhow dont be surprised if jupiter makes a a state title run. it was 10 years ago when coach steele lead jupiter to the championship game only to lose to a high school team that didnt even play Amare Stoudemire as he sat the bench the whole game... ! for all of you that dont know... he is a perennial nba all star that makes 20 million a year hoopin...!
kevin paxson will learn from this and it will make him a better player not to mention a better person. so please... all of you that have never played bball or any sport for that matter, just cheer for your team at the game... other than that please shut up. it really saddens me to see that some adults are really just plum dumb!

Hey Alex, I've played and coached basketball. I remember the championship game coach Steele played in. I remember you playing and also your brother. did coach long put up with that kind of nonsense? of course not! Did any player go over the top like paxson has numerous times? of course not! You can be a good coach but still have no control over your team. is a district championship back to back more important than RESPECT and INTEGRITY? To me NO! yes Paxson is 17 but that execuses him to act the way he does. so you get fouled you move on. Basketball is not ballet it is a physical sport where you will get roughed up. Kids today see what happens in the NBA with touch fouls and believe that is how it should be. Well its not! So yes you are a D1 athlete thats good! Do you argue touch fouls?

im not saying kevin doesn't need to cut the wining and complaining out, because he does. however i dont think it is right that every adult outside of jupiter and some even at jupiter come to the games just to watch him and see what happens so they can talk trash about the kid. he knows he needs to get over that stuff and i believe he will. the kid is a great high school player who definitely will have a chance a getting his college education paid for. maybe not at the d1 level because he is under sized at the shooting guard position, but believe come march and april there will be universities that will be trying to acquire his ACADEMIC/athletic services.

coach andersen is not coach long. he has a different style and the kids respond to it. both of them are amazing coaches and even better people. coach andersen has created a true family environment at jupiter and im confident jupiter will only be getting better in years to come. people forget... if jupiter isn't hosed at dwyer last week, with all the bs that went on in that game. it would have been 3 out of 4 years jupiter beat dwyer on senior night.

like i stated earlier. this is why only some people should be aloud to blog. the point guard was demetrious hodges. class of 2002. one of my best friends. he played football at east carolina. was also going to play bball there his senior year until a shoulder injury occurred in a football gama. he was the top player in the area that year. along with santonio holmes, and devin hester. i think both of those guys ended up being pretty good. now the dwyer player from jupiter, would be gerald christian. the last time i was on espn.com i noticed he is now rated in the top 30 players in the USA! so please get your facts right if you are going to talk to me. jackie manuel was locked up in the state championship game in 2000, against orlando jones... until hodges took over the entire game and led newman to a one point win. and if you really know your facts... matt elams older brother abram elam (currently starting safety for clevland browns) was on that newman team. so confirm with the elam family how real demetrios hodges was/is! if he was at jupiter we may have won back to back state championships... not newman.

Also, it's actually "whining", not "wining".

Probably ought to correct that one, too, because you're sure doing a lot of it.

Lets stay on topic kids. I think the point Alex is trying to make about Kevin Paxson is that he is 17 year who has a hard time and is working on handling his emotions (both good and bad) on the court. Regardless of who people think is to blame for not squelching this in years past, I think people need to relax and lay off Kevin Paxson the person. Especially, if you only see him on the court. His antics are deplorable, however, not many people blogging on this site, on the three articles about Kevin know him off the court. He is a great young man off the court. His issue is controlling his emotions in a competitive basketball setting.

I was just asking a question Alex. That is why I said who. Yes I remember Abram being on that team as well as Jackie. I also remember a very good player named Donald. Jackie might not have been Mr. Florida his senior year but I believe he was the year before. Gerald has been at Dwyer since he was a freshman so I don't know how that is transferring. Anyways why would he want to play football for Jupiter.(They produce good kickers and punters) It seemed to work out for him because he won a state championship and is going to be a gator. What facts did I get wrong? Jackie did go to Wellington and Elam went to PBL. I'm glad Demetrious is your best friend. Why did your boy transfer? You sound a bit like a hater. I saw that Newman team play Pope John Paul twice that year and Demetrious didn't leave that big of an impression on me because I don't remember him.(Not saying he wasn't good, just that I don't remember him) Best player in those games was Charles Fredricks AKA ET. I remember Pope lost three games that year and they were all to Newman. You are all over the place and make no sense. You sound like a very angry young man. Woo sahh buddy. Jupiter lost in both football and basketball to the mighty Dwyer Panthers and non transfer Jacoby Brissett. David Tassell commented on February 10, 2010 at 6:11 p.m.: report abuse

I have known Kevin Paxson and his family since Kevin was in grade school. Kevin's parents are two of the nicest people you ever want to meet and, off the court, Kevin has always been a polite, smart, and witty kid. Kevin is also the most competitive, driven athlete I have ever met in my life. I would hear the bouncing of the ball every day and night either in his driveway or our back yard as he practiced while most of his friends were watching tv or playing video games. Pound for pound, inch for inch, with his will to win, I would take Kevin Paxson on my team anyday.

For those of you critical of his "trash talking", vis a vi the fans and players, Kevin gets a lot more than he gives. Although I am more of a traditionalist in this regard, we cannot ignore the nature of the game today. Those of you who abhor such conduct are clueless as to what goes on in a basketball game, whether pick up, high school, college or pro. You don't have to like it, but that is part of the game at the highest levels and is exhibited by the some of the most gifted of athletes.

Kevin's conduct toward the referees for what he views as missed or bad calls has undoubtedly crossed the line of acceptable behavior. I have always thought Kevin needed to control himself in that regard not only because it is appropriated, but because last year it was evident to me that certain referees had it in for him. Clearly these "chickens came home to roost" in the Dwyer game.

Three referees somehow "missed" the foul where Kevin's face was scratched so badly he had to leave the court for half the second quarter and later get six stitches. Later, on the "no call" play (which appeared to be an obvious foul on Kevin) prompting Kevin's reaction and the first technical, the speed with which the second technical was assessed indicated that the referee was looking for a reason to eject him. As for the third technical by a second referee, based on what Kevin reportedly said, no other player on the court would have been "T'd" up so quickly with three techicals.

I have watched thousands of basketball games and coached hundreds of others and I have never seen a player or coach given three technicals in rapid succession, particularly in light of what the referee wrote in his report. Based upon the nature of the offense, to suspend Kevin for two weeks under these circumstances is excessive. I can only hope that Kevin's teammates can pull out the next two games so that Dwyer was not Kevin's last in his high school career.

This athlete is a great high school player. Without discipline, it will be interesting to see where he goes to college and if he will succeed. The officials need to control games and not let 17year old kids try to do this for them. Sounds like Kevin needs to grow up and act like a young adult ON and OFF the court. I am reading many excuses, but being a parent of 2 successful high school athletes, the parents, coach, athletic director and Jupiter High School should have taken care of this years ago. Alex, you have alot of good points, but would you be where you are today if you acted llike this continuosly? When Kevin can man up, maybe he can grow up.

Seriously, Grammar? commented on February 11, 2010 at 5:34 p.m.: report abuse

Dear Grammar?, I believe that in your critique of another's grammar, you made a few mistakes of your own.
"OBIVIOUSLY WE SEE WHAT SIDE OF THE FENCE YOUR FROM. aka limestone or kennedy"

First off, you have incorrectly used "your." I believe that you were intending to create a contraction of the words "you" and "are." Therefore, the correct contraction would be "you're."

Secondly, You have misspelled "obviously." This, I am assuming is quite obvious to you as well, being the grammarian you boast yourself to be.

Thirdly, your punctuation usage is quite incorrect. There should not be a period after your statement in all caps, unless of course, you chose to omit the incorrect usage of "aka" that followed.

As I have stated before, you have used "aka" entirely incorrectly. If you are indeed choosing to provide examples from your generalization regarding a fence, then you should use "ie." If you are unfamiliar with the Latin from which this is derived, as I very much suspect you are, it roughly translates to "in other words." Any usage of "ie" should be included in parentheses, or preceded by a comma.

Furthermore, you have neglected to capitalize the first letters of two proper nouns: "Kennedy" and "Limestone." This is entirely unacceptable, as every six-year-old is taught to capitalize proper nouns. If unsure as to the precise benchmark that this grammatical rule is labeled, please reference the Sunshine State Standards. Oddly enough, these same standards are taught to the students who live on the "side of the fence" you have described.

Finally, I believe that for the first part of your statement, you accidentally left the Caps Lock on, because surely as a grammarian, you would know that typing in all capital letters is never considered grammatically correct.

In this case, your offending (and I mean this in both a grammatical context and a social context) comment should read:

"Obviously we see what side of the fence you're from (ie. Limestone or Kennedy)."

That is all. Please make an effort to proofread and correct any errors before posting, certainly before posting to criticize another's grammar.

The statement "he will not tolerate none of that nonsense" is a double negative and is a real serious violation. Please address this with all haste.

Then, in your note, I was quite dismayed that you chose to capitalize Your in the 3rd paragraph, even though it is embedded within a sentence.

Lastly, I believe you need a comma following "Obviously" in your slam dunk conclusion as to how the sentence "obviously we see what side of the fence you're from (ie, Limestone or Kennedy)" should be structured.

This last issue is debatable and I'm quite interested in your lengthy explanation of the path you have taken.

Or we can continue the nonsense of the thread in adherence to its original topic.

He uses "sucks" in his comment (Not a "bad" word but still, not the way you want to rep yourself and your school publicly).

He then denies using it during the heat of a game in which he was angry.

We are expected to believe that he didn't use it in the middle of an intense game, right after he uses it while calm?

So, we can add "liar" to "hothead" and "bad sport."

How is that people have been saying what an out-of-control jerk this kid is for years and now we have to hear how nice his parents are and how he is a "good kid?"

"Andersen has spoken with Paxson about his on-court demeanor several times this season"

"The FHSAA also fined the school $250 for Paxson's offense, plus another $100 because he was the fourth Warriors basketball player to receive a suspension this season."

I have coached in Central FL for 15 years. I have coached state-ranked teams, bad teams and decent teams. I have NEVER had one player suspended or ejected. NEVER. Not once, much less FOUR in a one season. If JHS had any sense, they would find a coach who would get those kids under control. It is clear that they are out of control and that their coach lacks the ability or will to get them to do what they should.

I wish I could say that I am surprised. However, having grown up in PBG/Jupiter, I will state that part of the problem is that Jupiter has ALWAYS been low-brow. When I lived and played in PBC, there were three places where you could count on people acting like dirtbags: Jupiter, Pahokee and Suncoast. Looks like nothing has changed for 2 of 3. Despite all the development and improvements, it is still seems to take on a trailer trash attitude and that's shameful.

Please as ever.. It's over. Hey coach Anderson reminds me of an old JHS Coach, Coach Friday. Had all the talent on a team in the world but sucked as a coach! Do I need to name the talent he had on his team????

I can't stand that people believe Dwyer recruits. The truth is that the program draws parents and kids to want to be a part of a very hard working and supportive situation that is all about the kids. Coach Ross behind the tough persona everyone sees at the games cares more about kids then winning basketball games! He uses basketball to give kids life lessons, work ethic, respect, and humility. He is a great example and developer of boys to men. There are better basketball coaches than Coach Ross but there is no better person deserving of the title "Coach"!

Dwyer parent, loved what you said about Coach Ross! I do not know him, but my son has been with Coach Budnyk and daughter with many many coaches at her high school. These coaches have always cared and still care about my kids. They are both at UF and will have lifelong relationships with their "Coach". These kind of people are hard to come by in todays society. The ones that care about developing the kids rather than winning are winners in my book. The behavior described in these blogs would have never been put up with in my childrens programs. The school my daughter attended was because of the magnet program, the coach and the school. My son, the school. Those who attend Dwyer have the same choice. That is what the magnet programs are about. About Alex and his blog, these kids that should have attended Jupiter HS and went elsewhere, maybe they saw the light years ago.

You folks down in Jupiter are obviously very passionate about your basketball.
I'm from elsewhere in Florida and have had the opportunity to see Kevin play both in AAU and for Jupiter. I don't know or care about your rivalries, but I have to say that I am not surprised this happened. It is obvious that Kevin needed to know that there are consequences to his behaviour, and that too few people in his life had taught him those lessons.
This is a hard lesson. Here's to hoping he learns from it before it is too late.
