Friday's girls soccer

Friday, February 05, 2010

Sun-Sentinel

There was little emotion after every goal in American Heritage's dominating 4-1 victory over Palmer Trinity on Friday.

That's because even with the win, which clinched the Class 2A regional championship and sent the Stallions to the state finals in Tampa, the message coming from the Stallions was that there's still work to do.

"We are going to have to play a lot better than this, or else it's going to be a short trip in Tampa," American Heritage coach Steve Burgess said. "Lots of things to work on in practice, but the girls have done a great job at taking on board what we've taught them."

American Heritage's Christina Cobb opened the scoring three minutes in with a strong shot from the edge of the box, and Lauren Silver added another five minutes later.

Cobb and Silver would combine for a second-half goal on a chip-in from Cobb after a Silver pass beat the Palmer Trinity goalkeeper. Sidney Parodie capped the afternoon for the Stallions (21-2-3) with a long, looping goal from outside the box that sailed over the heads of all the Falcons (19-5-0).

The only Trinity Palmer goal came on a slow roller from Fernanda Rojas after Stallions' goalkeeper Samantha Perretty injured her arm in a collision. Perretty missed 10 minutes but returned to finish the match.

Class 5A

Melbourne 5, West Boca Raton 0: The Bulls (22-1-0) were held to two shots on goal in a loss the defending state champion Bulldogs (23-0-0) in the regional championship in Melbourne. West Boca Raton coach Hassan Jaddaoui said he was disappointed with the outcome, but pleased with what his team was able to do this year. "Playing in the regional finals is an exceptional accomplishment for our team," he said. "We had a great season and we built character in victory and tonight in loss."
