Cardinal Newman's Kevin Jorden leads Class 1A state golf tournament; St. Andrew's Jan Chanpalagsri in tie for sixth

Cardinal Newman junior Kevin Jorden shot a 5-under 67 Tuesday to lead the Class 1A state golf tournament at Juliette Falls in Dunnellon.

Benjamin High is leading the team competition with 288, four strokes ahead of Fort Lauderdale-Archbishop McCarthy, after the first day of the two-day, 36-hole event, which concludes today. Newman is in third, five strokes behind Benjamin.

In the Class 1A girls state tournament in at Ocala's Golden Hills Golf & Turf Club, St. Andrew's junior Jan Chanpalagsri shot a first-round 72 to put her in a sixth-place tie and three strokes behind leader Shelby Coyle of Plantation-American Heritage.

"My score was fine, but I feel like I should have done better," Chanpalagsri said.

Plantation-American Heritage leads with a 296, two strokes ahead of St. Petersburg-Northside Christian.

St. Andrew's is in fifth place, with 321, a stroke behind Orlando Lake Highland Prep and nine back of Naples Community School, which is third.

American Heritage in Delray Beach finished the first round in 11th place paced by freshman Ashley Burke, who is tied for 27th after shooting an 81. Jorden is trailed by Archbishop's Jesse Perkins, who also shot 67, and Benjamin's Matt Ceravolo at 3 under.

"I was pretty surprised Kevin shot a 67. We were talking last night and we thought 2-under would be a good score on this golf course," said Newman coach Toby Hill.

In Class 2A boys in Dunnellon, Martin County shot a 299 and trails leader Ft. Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas by one stroke. Will Davenport led Martin with a 3-under-69 and is tied for third in the individual competition. Teammate Andrew Goodman shot a 70, tied for sixth.

In Class 2A girls in Ocala, Spanish River's Christina Ocampo shot a 2-over-74 and is tied for tenth place. Park Vista's Chelsea Mokary shot an 80 and is tied for 29th. Park Vista shot a team 345 and is in eighth place.
