American Heritage's Claire Dunlap, 15, taken off respirator after suffering cardiac arrest; Friday's softball, flag football results
Friday, April 17, 2009
Claire Dunlap, the 15-year-old American Heritage softball player who went into cardiac arrest Wednesday night, was taken off a respirator Friday.
Robert Stone, American Heritage's headmaster, said Dunlap cannot talk yet, but doctors plan to reduce the sedative she is on and bring her out of a medically induced coma.
Doctors still do not know what caused the seizure that stopped the honor student's heart after a victory at West Boca Raton.
Dunlap, a sophomore, appeared healthy and there were no indications Wednesday that anything was wrong with her.
After Dunlap collapsed during a post-game meeting, an off-duty firefighter and West Boca High's athletic trainer used defibrillators to revive her. She has remained unconscious since Wednesday.
