All-Area: Jacoby Brissett, large schools offensive player of the year

by Matt Porter
Jacoby Brissett made the transition this year from great athlete to great quarterback.
Brissett won a state title with Dwyer last year, but still had to shake the label that he was getting by on his athleticism, a basketball player moonlighting as a football player.
All he did was become one of the most sought-after quarterback prospects in the state, throwing for 1,671 yards, 22 touchdowns and zero interceptions during the regular season. In the playoffs, he threw for 802 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception as the Panthers' bid to repeat as state champions ended with a loss in the state semifinals.
"He hasn't played a bad game for us all year," coach Jack Daniels said.
If such a stat could be quantified, Brissett would have led the area in pocket presence. Standing 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, the senior, a student in Dwyer's finance academy who has scholarship offers from Florida State, Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame and Wisconsin, has the ability to target receivers in the end zone from 50 yards away.
He also has the ability to shake the most aggressive of pass rushes and turn any third-and-long into a first down with his legs. He was Dwyer's second-leading rusher this season.
Brissett showed Daniels his considerable potential as a ninth-grader. During one game, he led the Panthers on a scoring drive against Miami-Booker T. Washington, one of the best teams in the country at the time.
"We knew he could do some things we hadn't seen in a quarterback," Daniels said. "It's just whether he wanted to make that call for himself. He's a heck of a basketball player."
And a heck of a quarterback.

Cameron Lewis, Boca Raton, Senior, WR
Speedster put up 490 yards on 33 catches and came through as starting QB when Bobcats needed him.

Mike Matulis, Park Vista, Senior, OL
Despite injuries, South Carolina commit was one of the reasons the Cobras' run game dominated.
